Will Spending Time With Dogs Lower One’s Risk of Schizophrenia?

You may already be familiar with Schizophrenia. It’s a brain disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Some people with the condition get medications and a support system, while others face homelessness.

Recently, Johns Hopkins Medicine did a study which revealed that a person has a lower risk of developing Schizophrenia when exposed to a dog early in life.

How can this be possible? The researchers think that exposure to pets can trigger a child’s immune system and alter the microbiome. (Because psychiatric disorders are linked to changes in the immune system.) This may explain why kids with pet dogs are less likely to develop the condition.

And don’t forget…. Pets are powerful forms of stress relief!
