West Virginia opens schools for service animals

In West Virginia schools, service animals are allowed to aid students with disabilities.

Kristin Anderson, Communications Director of West Virginia Department of Education, says the districts must make reasonable modifications to allow service animals in school with the condition that they may also remove them from school should they be out of control or should the students be unable to effectively control them.

Harrison County Pupil Services has two service dogs supporting the students. According to its supervisor, Dr. Vic Fisher, they only require a letter of intent to be submitted to the superintendent at least 10 business days before bringing it, stating the need and the tasks that the service animal can do in relation to the disability.

Additionally, there should be proper documentation coming from a licensed veterinarian containing the health certificate and proof of immunizations and vaccinations.
