As Riley Cull and Sandy de Kock are being recognized by Volunteer Whanganui as volunteers of the month they have been paired with two female assistant dogs Lyra and Nadia, a German Shepherd and Borzois.

Borzois are a breed of Russian hunting dogs. “They have been used successfully overseas as assistance dogs, as mobility dogs because they’re big enough for you to lean on. We are the first people in New Zealand doing this with Borzois,” says Sandy.

Sandy is Nadia’s partner. Both Riley and Sandy are also medical professional volunteers from the Kotuku Foundation Assistance Animals Aotearoa (KFAAA) and are training the two dogs to be efficient assistant animals so that they can serve people who need assistance at the Volunteer Wanganui.
