Alberton School District has a resident therapy dog, a 5-year-old yellow lab named Sunny. She works at school each day with her handler who is a music teacher — Mike Wolfe.

Wolfe experienced a lot of challenges when he first introduced Sunny to the school board members and lawyers. He was met with questions like What if kids are allergic? What if kids are scared of dogs? It’s a good thing that the school board finally agreed to have Sunny.

While training Sunny to become a therapy dog was a personal investment for Wolfe, it was all worth it. Sunny dances with the kids in music class. She also visits the counselor’s office from time to time to help calm a stressed student down. According to Kara Berg, the school counselor, the kids pet Sunny while being counseled and it helps them process things.

Sunny is earning her spot in the yearbook in the staff section. She has been amazing even if it’s still her second year in Alberton School District.
