The Story of a Marine Mother and Her Established Volunteer-Run Non-Profit Service Dog Program

It’s been a mixture of emotions for the past four years ever since Laura Barker found the Hero Pups back in 2016. Most of the time the previous years were filled with happiness. Sometimes they were chaotic.

The volunteer-run non-profit headed by Barker trains service dogs and pairs them with veterans and first responders to help them recover from physical and emotional damage incurred from service.

Establishing Hero Pups came from her experience when her son was shot three times in the chest while serving in Afghanistan back in 2010. “When I saw how much this service dog helped alleviate some of his symptoms, not just the physical but the hidden wounds as well, I said, ‘how could I not do this?’”, Barker said.
