Formerly called National Guide Dog Month, the National Service Dog Month was established in 2008 by Dick Van Patten, an actor, and animal advocate, after he was inspired by a visit to Guide Dogs of the Desert in Palm Springs.

The fundraising that he launched to benefit guide and service dog training schools shortly became an annual celebration.

A lot of service dog organizations have two main objectives: to provide trained companion animals for people with disabilities and to save rescue animals’ lives from dying in shelters.

The work that these service dogs do is therapeutic and helpful to the humans that they care for. This month is dedicated in their honor to raise awareness and to appreciate the amazing work that they do for people across the country.
