There’s a difference between a service dog and emotional support animals, and private dog trainer Brandi Garcia wishes that more people are educated on the true definition of service dogs.

This month aims to raise awareness for them and for the valuable work that they do for their humans.

While every breed can become a service dog, not all are capable to be one. Prospects can already undergo the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test at 7 weeks old by putting them in different situations to determine confidence and trainability.

The most common service dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles and Collies due to their trainability and stable temperament. Service dogs are considered to be on duty and must not be distracted by petting.
