Boots is just one of the few service dogs trained by the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center inmates. The program Paws for Patriots rescues dogs from shelters then pair them with inmates to be trained. The dogs, upon completion of training, graduate and get paired with veterans and individuals in need of service dogs.

Kevin Watson was an Army Veteran who struggled with PTSD and suicidal thoughts before he met Boots through the program. “Lots of times Boots can tell my mood before I even feel them myself, I’ve had times where she crawled up in my lap and didn’t really know why but it helped me to recover from where I was,” Watson said.

The JBCC inmate who trained Boots is Michael Hooten. He fed Boots for 8 weeks and brought her back to health after being a stray for 2 years and 6 months in the shelter.
