Question: Should passengers purchase extra seats for their service animals?

Answer: The airline may not require that the passenger purchase an extra seat unless the animal will not fit in the immediate seating area, lap, or under-seat storage area of the passenger. For example, a Great Dane might be denied cabin space unless an additional seat is purchased. However, if the flight happens to be fairly empty and there is a lot of space available, the passenger may not purchase an additional seat.
