Between the months of April and June 2020, researchers at the University of York and the University of Lincoln conducted an online survey. The survey was attended by 5,926 of the United Kingdom’s residents with ages over 18 years. Almost 90% of the participants shared to have had at least one companion animal. In the survey, the most common pets were found to be cats and dogs then followed by small mammals and fish.

Along with the survey, it showed that owning a pet improved mental wellness among individuals while maintaining these healthy levels and lowering loneliness. “This work is particularly important at the current time as it indicates how having a companion animal in your home can buffer against some of the psychological stress associated with lockdown,” said Prof. Daniel Mills, Co-author from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Lincoln.
