In a foreign mission, Kuno the Belgian Malinois was deployed with the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service along with his handler last 2019. The mission was to conduct a raid on a compound when they were under attack from enemy forces.
During the battle, Kuno rushed under machinegun-fire and grenade explosions from an insurgent for a tackle. This resulted in a successful mission. Kuno however, received bullet wounds on both back legs during the assault.
One of his limbs had to be amputated before going back to the UK. He is the first UK military working dog to receive custom-made prosthetic limbs. His dedication to the service allowed him to receive the PDSA Dickin Medal – the highest honor for animals.
