Michigan legislators are currently discussing a new bill that will make it illegal to fake emotional support animals.
In this proposal, jail time of up to 90 days and a maximum fine of $500 and community service will be imposed for those who will be caught. It will also require providers to treat a patient for at least 6 months before providing a notarized letter to give a designation to the animal.
However, mental health professionals like Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner William Davis have concerns regarding the note as some of the patients might have been treated somewhere else.
State Rep. Matt Hall, R-Marshall says these regulations are to keep people from exploiting the system as there are cases where people just want to bring their pet along.
Emotional support animals are different from service dogs, and the proposed bill will not affect the latter.
