The COVID-19 pandemic didn’t just cause problems to the global economy. It also affected the lives of everyone in terms of social wellness. For the elderly in Maui County, Hawaii, these negative effects have compounded given that these citizens already live in social isolation.

Fortunately, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided funding for the Maui County Office on Aging and the Aging and Disability Resource Center’s (MCOA/ADRC) new project called Furry Friends.

This project aims to ease loneliness, anxiety, social isolation, and depression among the elderly by providing household pets. For those who cannot own or care for a live pet, robotic companion animals are provided to them.
