A 2017 report by the American Psychological Association states that more college students are seeking the help of counselors because of their stress and anxiety. Such news makes us realize that mental health problems are prevalent among colleges.
Some college students have benefited from the companion of emotional support animals. These ESAs were prescribed to them by licensed psychologists. ESAs can be anything from dogs to cats to hedgehogs. Dr. Joshua Klapow states that there is evidence that petting animals help reduce anxiety. Animals stabilize a person’s emotions and calm him down.
The problem is that not all universities welcome emotional support animals. There have been complaints of ESAs causing disruptions to classroom activities and because of that, these animals are no longer welcome. Therefore, it’s important that these animals receive proper training.
At the same time, educational institutions should update their laws regarding emotional support animals. School is supposed to be our second home, and ESAs make students’ experiences better.
