Drive-In Pet Therapy Sessions For California Dementia Patients

pet sessions for dementia patients

Kronk and Kuzco are two alpacas from the Helen Woodward Animal Center that greet the clients from Alzheimer’s San Diego for the Pet Encounter Therapy Critter Drive-In. They are two of the animals that bring joy to visitors who stay in their cars as part of social distancing practices.

Part of the encounter is the center’s staff providing sheets of fun facts about the animals outside the car windows. Visitors have held up thank you notes inside their vehicles with smiles and laughter. This shows the appreciation and joy the animals bring to clients even as they safely distance themselves socially.

“It means so much to us to find a unique way to provide this therapy. We are looking forward to offering this opportunity to the other facilities we used to regularly visit before the pandemic hit,” says Robert Cohen, who has run the program for over 26 years.
