Denver International Airport Celebrates Its Dog Therapy Program’s 5th Year

The DIA’s Canine Airport Therapy Squad otherwise known as CATS started in 2015 for the purpose of bringing travelers comfort and happiness. Air travel can be stressful but as Volunteer Program Manager Karla Grahn said, “Dogs bring out the best in people. They relax people. They bring a smile. Dogs know when somebody needs a little extra love.”

This proved to be true when a woman hugged Nelson the Newfoundland and wept for 20 minutes. Nelson forced his owner Ron Horn to walk over to the woman after seeing her glassy-eyed but Ron didn’t want to approach the lady. Later, Ron found out that the woman was stressed by fear of the person she was going to visit die before she arrived.

Since the pandemic, the program has been shut down but will resume operations on thanksgiving week following safety protocols.
