American Humane Condemns the Government for Leaving Military Contract Working Dogs in Kabul

Along with more than a hundred Americans left in Afghanistan, there are also military contract dogs that have been abandoned in Kabul. It’s important to note that contract working dogs are not owned by the Department of Defense as they are only hired to do jobs like bomb-sniffing.

All military dogs owned by the DoD are now home as of now. A photo circulating on social media of dogs in carriers are under the care of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue – an organization founded by Charlotte Maxwell-Jones, an American.

As animal lovers, we can only hope that the US government would put an effort to rescue these pooches in the next evacuation mission. One way to do so is to make an appeal to congress to classify and treat the contract working dogs as equal to the DoD’s military working dogs.

Service Dog Gets Paired With College Student

Lillian Ellmore, a 19-year-old freshman of North Carolina from Lexington, has just received her service dog Fenway after being trained for two years. “Fenway was really easy. He was never a troublesome dog, and we didn’t have a lot of behavior issues to work through. He was friendly and sweet,” said Krysta Kyle, a mother of four and the one who raised the dog with her family.

This made the 2-year-old Labrador and Golden Retriever mix to be the right good boy for the job. Fenway is trained to respond to 40 advanced commands that will help Ellmore complete basic tasks such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, and retrieving dropped objects.

It may be hard for the Kyle family to see Fenway go, but knowing that he will change a teen’s life by helping her achieve success in school is a happy memory that will live on.

Getting an Emotional Support Animal is a Form of Self-Care

self-care doggo

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed how physically, mentally, and emotionally vulnerable we are as humans. Because of it, there has also been a rising importance of self-care throughout these trying times.

Among these self-care plans is owning an emotional support animal. As Doris Day said, “I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you can get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source.”

Yes, owning a pet does indeed help you get through tough times. But an ESA can even do more for you. They are specifically trained to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar, and PTSD. Are you at risk or experiencing these problems? If yes, talk to your therapist about getting an ESA now.

Iowa Nonprofit Helps Owners Feed Their Pets During Hardship

PWD's ESA

Linda Siems, a woman from Nora Springs, understands how it is hard for both the owner and their pet during times of need. That’s why she started a nonprofit organization called Mollie’s Mission. Its purpose? To fight pet hunger when an owner cannot take care of their pet due to medical problems.

This idea sprung from after she attended a service meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church where they were discussing feeding programs for the community. Siems said, “I left there thinking we’re taking care of the needs of our community members through providing meals. We’re taking care of the kids through our school systems. But who is taking care of the pets?”

If you live in Nora Springs and currently have problems feeding or taking care of your pets due to a medical condition, you should contact Mollie’s Mission for assistance through their Facebook, email, or website. You can also use these contact details if you want to donate and help others in need.

President Biden Signs Bill That Allows More Veterans to Receive Service Dogs

doggo and vet

The Puppies Assisting Wounded Service Members for Veterans Therapy Act (PAWS Act) is a new law that will help more veterans afford a service dog or the cost of training them. The law also widens the eligibility of the veterans who want to avail a four-legged companion.

This means that not only those with injuries or physical disabilities will receive support from the Veterans Affairs (VA), but also those suffering from PTSD and other mental and emotional damages.

“The effects of going through a traumatic experience and that residual is with you in your mind and in your body for a very long time if no forever,” said Lani Rethaber, executive director of Patriot K9s, a service dog organization that helps veterans train their dogs to become service animals.

Starting next year, the bill will be in effect along with its five-year pilot program.

Human Services Agency Gifts Nursing Home Residents With Robotic Therapy Pets

robot pet

The Jewish Family Services delivered animated robotic therapy dogs to residents at Heritage Manor in Youngstown, Ohio. Their motto is just because seniors would find it hard to take care of pets, doesn’t mean they should miss out on the happiness of having one.

Lynne Azar, senior outreach coordinator for Jewish Family Services said, “What this does is it gives them something to love and to attach to, but also to communicate with in a physical sense with touch, with laughter and joy and so many other areas of communication that may not be verbal, but are non-verbal.”

Although the therapy dogs are robotic, they can still respond to touch and sounds providing emotional support to the seniors as real animals can give.

Paul “Pen” Farthing is an ex-Royal Marine and founder of Nowzad, a charity/animal sanctuary in Kabul. With the recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan’s capital, he is making a plea to UK ministers to “do the right thing”. This means flying 71 people from the Middle Eastern country to the United Kingdom. In this 71 personnel are trained and fully qualified female veterinarians.

“What do you say to someone who is probably going to be told they will have to marry a Taliban fighter and end up living at home, never being allowed to leave and just raising children with someone they absolutely detest?,” said Farthing to BBC News from Kabul. The Foreign Office said, “We are in contact with Mr. Farthing to offer assistance.”
