A lot of Santa Barbara County residents adopted furry friends from local animal shelters as a result of NBC’s “Clear the Shelters” campaign. The campaign, which is a one-month event, helped 55 pets find their forever homes.

It started on August 23, 2021, and ended on September 20, 2021. Thirty dogs, seventeen cats, six rabbits, one guinea pig, and one rooster were adopted. The animals came from the Santa Barbara County Animal Services Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP), Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter (BUNS), Santa Barbara Humane – Santa Maria Campus, Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society, and Dog Adoption and Welfare Group (DAWG).

One good thing about the pandemic is that it helped save a lot of animals from rescues and shelters because a lot of us were in need of a companion during the lockdowns. But now we’re going back to our pre-pandemic life, a lot of pets adopted due to the pandemic are now being returned to the shelters of where they came from.

“You have a full-time job, a social life, you can leave home and still be foster, volunteer, or adopt a pet. When we get back to normal, we shouldn’t stop thinking that people can engage in this,” said Jennifer Schluter from the Municipal Care and Management of Animals in Chicago.

If you can afford to care for and feed your adopted pets, it might be best to get a nanny for them. If you’re struggling to keep your companion animal well-fed, you can ask for help from pet pantries. Choosing to stand by your decision to give an animal a forever home is a huge help to other fur babies because this allows other shelters to house new rescues.

You read it right. The Blue Ridge Humane Society of Hendersonville, North Carolina invites you to celebrate our love for animals through a 3-day backyard party. The events will start on September 17, 2021, and will end on September 19. You can bring your dog to the party or hold your own gathering in your residence and donate the proceeds to the humane from your end.

The money raised will go to the funding of future animal rescue efforts, emergency response, pet support programs, pet food assistance programs, and additional community partnerships to support healthy and happy animals.

Pets and owners alike of Madison, Wisconsin have gone on a walk at McGaw Park in Fitchburg to fundraise a non-profit organization for the training of service dogs. The event is held annually by the Wisconsin Academy for Graduate Service Dogs (WAGS).

80 people attended the walk for a cause. Aaron Backer, executive director of WAGS said, “That’s how we support our budget every year is donations from the community, so this is one of the ways we raise money but help introduce people to service dogs and how they help people.”

The organization has partnered more than 200 service dogs to people with physical disabilities. They are also looking for more volunteers to train the newly-received Golden Retriever puppies.

We cannot deny the fear of COVID-19’s possible emergence of new variants. But we also cannot deny that we are slowly returning to our normal lives. What others don’t realize is that the ones who will be negatively hit by the return to normalcy are our companion animals.

Kallie Milleman, a spokesperson for the OSPCA Ontario, said, “There’s no doubt that our pets have played an important role in our lives during these last 17 months. As we return to a post-pandemic life, not only are we adjusting, so are our pets are too.”

It’s important to take time and train our furry companions to feel confident and safe as they’re left alone in our homes while we work. These include storing a month’s worth of emergency pet food and setting a schedule to let them have outdoor exposure.

September 11, 2001 was a grim day for the United States. Yet, we never faced the hardship of the event alone. Humankind’s best friends were also there to search for those who were buried under the rubble, trapped survivors, and comfort those who lost their loved ones.

Among the brave hounds that helped are Roselle, Salty, Sirius, Bretagne, Coby, Guinness, Thunder, Sage, Trakr, and Jake. Each dog has their own story of humble beginnings and selfless heroism. Some are living legends. Others are now running free in doggy heaven.

Let us not forget their valiant efforts just as we remember to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to complete the rescue mission 20 years ago.

Emotional Assistance Animals have been a huge help in giving hope to people with legitimate emotional problems and mental disabilities. However, there is an alarming and disturbing trend online that is creating distrust for people who are in genuine need of ESAs.

That is getting an ESA approval letter online by just filling up a survey without a proper diagnosis from a therapist or a doctor. This has made landlords skeptical about the worth of future tenants with approval letters as this can also be used to bypass no-pet policies and pet ownership fees.

Documents like ESA approval letters that especially come from the internet are not sufficient and reliable to establish that a person is indeed in need of an ESA. These $100-$200 documents are even considered fraudulent to consumers because they cannot be used despite appearing to be legal.

So what makes an ESA approval letter legitimate? The therapist or doctor who signs it should have examined the patient personally. The professional whose signature is in the paper should also have personal knowledge of the condition the patient has.

As for landlords, they should double-check the approval letters they’re presented with and follow Housing and Urban Development guidelines on not to accept applying tenants with documents procured just by answering a short online survey.

Police officers, like military servicemen, aren’t exempted from experiencing trauma on the job. Some get stressed over street violence while others find it hard to sleep at night due to unsolved murders. In the light of the George Floyd protests, police officers, especially beat cops who are just out doing routine patrols, have been subjected to assault and harassment.

During a brainstorming session of the NYPD, the brass has decided to add two new unlikely detectives to the Employee Assistance Unit. The new members, Jenny and Piper are Labrador Retrievers that will provide mental and emotional therapy to NYPD officers.

Lt. Janna Salisbury, head of the  NYPD’s EAU, said the therapy dogs and their handlers “will respond to critical incidents involving on and off-duty members of the department… breaking down traditional mental health barriers, reducing stigmas that often prevent officers from seeking care.”

Yoshitomo Kimura, a 61-year-old from Osaka, is one of the PWDs that have been saved by their service dog when no one else could. Years ago on one winter day, Kimura fell off his wheelchair as he was trying to get into his car. Nobody heard his cries for help except for Cynthia, his Labrador Retriever service dog.

Cynthia was able to fetch Kimura’s cellphone for which he used to call his neighbors for help. “No one was coming, so I thought that I was going to freeze outside. She really saved my life and I am eternally grateful for that.”

However, the problem with most Japanese PWDs is that it’s not easy to acquire a service dog. This is due to “barriers” and social stigmas that hinder the acceptance and use of service dogs in public settings. A lot of Japanese still think that service dogs are just well-trained dogs and not a necessity for PWDs to participate in society.

“I hope people’s perceptions of disabled people change [from] watching the Paralympics, from people that can’t do anything by themselves that need help, to these people that are doing extraordinary things in all sorts of creative ways,” said Tomoko Hashizume, head of the nonprofit Japan Service Dog Resource Center.

After President Biden signed the law to provide service dogs to veterans with war trauma, people are now paying attention to how therapy dogs can help former servicemen. One of the therapy dogs that has already been giving hope to veterans is Shadow, a 3-year-old golden retriever.

Michael Hanke, a supervisor in Klein Hall, Chippewa Falls, says, “The purpose of a therapy dog is the companionship. A properly trained therapy dog can identify certain issues that a veteran is having. If you walk around the halls and you see Shadow, sometimes he will just be laying down sleeping, and somehow he just knows if a veteran is going through an issue. He will just hang out with that veteran, and the veteran will get release from that.”

Therapy dogs don’t cost as much as service dogs when it comes to training. This could help the Veterans Affairs spend funds efficiently while still being able to help more and more veterans effectively.
