Before Adopting A Dog, Consider These

adopt a doggo

Pet ownership has become a major contributor to keeping our mental health in check amidst the pandemic. And adoption rates have increased as people with no furry companions inquire shelters to have their own partner in lockdowns or quarantines.

While this is a good thing because people in need of companionship also open opportunities for rescue dogs to find a loving home, most adopters tend to forget that owning a pet is a huge undertaking.

Part of this commitment is giving time to care for the dogs and having the financial necessities to provide food and other important needs such as healthcare. Not to mention having a solid plan of what happens to their pets once everything goes back to normal.

If you intend to adopt a dog today, you must think about everything thoroughly and prepare for the cost and process.

Help These Rescue Dogs Find Eternal Loving Homes

The CHA Animal Shelter, located in Columbus, Ohio, removed 17 dogs from a house in Shadyside. This was after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) requested them due to observed negligence from the area.

There were also more than 90 dogs that were rescued in late May. These dogs were found living in single-wide trailers without access to food, water, or even fresh air. “When the ASPCA assists with the rescue of animal victims of neglect or cruelty, our priority is not only to remove those animals from harm but to provide them with the care they need to prepare them for life in new, loving homes,” said Jasmine Holsinger, a member of the ASPCA.

The dogs have undergone behavioral and medical treatment ever since the first rescue phase and are now in preparation for adoption. Interested in adopting one of the rescued dogs? Visit the CHA Animal Shelter’s website by clicking this link.

Sexual Assault Victim Creates Therapy Animal Plushies That Benefit Mental Health

dog plushie

Savanna Parafox was sexually assaulted at a Colorado college. She came home to Arizona to recover and heal from the traumatic event. Not only that but her mother Georgie, Exceptional Heroes’ chief executive officer and founder, also lost her job due to the pandemic.

Despite these harsh challenges, they have formed a duo in Goodyear and started a business to help others. They also recruited Georgie’s mother, Doris Koine, to fight alongside their battles. “We are a manufacturing company; however, Savanna created a patent-pending product that is for mental health, as well as mental wellness. She developed it two years ago, during her own healing process.”

The products are plushies modeled after Monroe the rabbit and Shelby the American bulldog. Both are endorsed by mental health care professionals and backed by cognitive science.

Memphis Animal Services Urges Pet Owners to Keep Their Animals Cool During Heat Waves

dog in house

Memphis temperatures are reaching the upper 90s this summer season. If you live in the area, this increasing heat index wouldn’t only be dangerous for you but also for your pet. Look for signs of white gums, lethargy, and excessive panting.

The Memphis Animal Services will pick up animals that are in potentially deadly environments and will hold them in kennels. They will find the owners of these pets and if nobody comes for a claim, the animals will be rehomed.

Alexis Pugh, director of Memphis Animal Services, said, “If you wouldn’t want to be out in this heat, your dog doesn’t either. If you wouldn’t want to drink the water in their bowl, because it looks gross, they don’t want to drink it either. Treat your pet like a member of the family.”

ADA Dispute on Detroit Settled

law

A man with a disability and a service animal made a complaint through the Civil Rights Hotline. This was after an employee from the Westborn markets demanded that he should show written proof about his service dog’s legality. The man refused and was asked to leave the market when he declined the demand.

Saima Mohsin, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, said, “People with disabilities who use service animals should not have to suffer through invasive questions or provide written documentation for their dogs to go grocery shopping or engage in other activities of daily living.”

As a result, an investigation was done, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced the settlement on July 26, 2021. Westborn Inc. has agreed to adopt a non-discrimination policy, specifically with issues regarding service animal provisions. They will also train all of their employees on ADA mandates and start putting up displays that inform service animals are welcome in each of its stores.

Pilot Lends Plane for Service Dog Air Travel Training

Adrian Verburg lends his skill and 1947 Stinson 108-2 to help Thaliea get used to the sound and movement of airplanes. Thaliea is a Siberian Husky mix that works as a psychiatric assistance dog and was rescued after being abandoned on the streets of a northern Quebec community.

Her owner, Kayla Banfield, who suffers from an anxiety disability, said, “If I’m fidgeting my hands, she’ll make me stop. She’ll paw at me, and if I ignore her, she’ll put two paws on me, and if I continue to ignore her, she’ll jump up on me and pull both my arms down to her.”

With more training, Thaliea will get used to air travel and airport environments which will help her accompany Banfield for her travels to Nunavut where she’ll teach music, visual arts, and English to students from Grade 10 through 13.

Illinois Police Welcomes New Facility Dog

golden ret

The Bartlett Police Department welcomes Maverick, a 14-month-old Golden Retriever. Unlike police dogs, Maverick’s job is to be an ambassador in the Bartlett community by attending local events and mingling with residents in the same way police officers would.

Sgt. Tom Alagna, who is the dog’s primary handler, said, “So far, members of the community that have met him have loved him.” Aside from being an ambassador, Maverick will also provide emotional support to civilians and police officers in times of trauma, stress, and grief.

Maverick was donated by the  Canines 4 Comfort, a volunteer-run non profit in Round Lake that provides service animals for those in need. Bartlett residents can now expect to see Maverick in service.

How to Safely Evacuate Animals During a Wildfire

wildfire

It’s midsummer in the western part of the world and there’s no surprise why wildfires are raging in the western United States. Record-breaking drought and heatwaves are observed and you should take precautionary measures to save your animals from disasters during this hot season.

First of all, know the alert procedures in the area and stay updated on announcements from local authorities. Keep a go-bag ready. It should contain water, food for everyone for two weeks, bowls, eating utensils, a first-aid kit, a hygiene kit, radio, medications, pet stuff, and plastic bags for cleaning up waste.

Know where to go in case a wildfire displaces you and your household. Rehearse your evacuation procedure. Make backup plans of routes in case your current path is blocked. Stay prepared. Stay safe.

obedience

Veterans P.A.W.S. (Providing American Warriors Solace) will start offering dog obedience classes on August 7, 2021, to raise money for veterans in need of service animals. The veterans will receive the service dogs for free.

Ruth Koch, a retired Navy sailor who has suffered from anxiety and now trains, said, “These kinds of things actually help me get out in the world again.” She was inspired to train more dogs for obedience after meeting Willow and Ragnar, two service animals that were assigned to her.

Interested in having your dog trained in military style? Sign up for the classes through Veterans P.A.W.S. Facebook page.
