Ivy is an 8-year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who works with Music City Pet Partners in Nashville as a therapy dog. Her job is providing canine comfort to patients and staff in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other institutions in Middle Tennessee.

As part of the International Assistance Pet Week, which is observed during the first week of August, Ivy visited the residents and staff of the Morning Pointe at Tullahoma. She was also accompanied by the volunteers of Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care.

“She [Ivy] will visit each person in the group and knows who needs the most love by snuggling with that specific person longer than the rest. She does tricks and makes them smile,” said Kelly Brunelle, Ivy’s owner.

Kelly and Ivy will visit more care facilities and residents of these Middle Tennessee institutions can expect to see Ivy in the near future.

Indiana Animal Shelter Hosts Its First Annual Festival

fest

Grateful Rescue and Sanctuary held its first annual Grateful Fest at the Delaware County Fairgrounds last August 14, 2021. More than a hundred businesses joined the festivities and showed support for the shelter’s efforts in helping stray animals get adopted.

During the fest, there were also booths that sold pet products, bouncy houses for kids, and a contest for adults. The event was a great success. Muncie citizens from all walks of life were able to take part in the festivities and enjoy the experience.

Pamela Terhune, founder of Grateful Rescue and Sanctuary, said, “We are thrilled to bring the community together to support a wonderful cause — the animals. We are so grateful for the volunteers, the sponsors, the donors and those who have come forward to offer help where needed.”

Lawsuit Could Make Service-Dog Company Pay over $3 Million

law

Charles D. Warren Jr., a founder of Warren Retrievers firm, a Virginia-based service-dog company, could pay an amount over $3 Million in restitution and other penalties for deceiving customers by providing them badly-trained dogs.

The office of Attorney General Mark Herring said in a news release that Warren’s animals allegedly could assist patients with autism, diabetes, and other problems. However, the customers said they were delivered with puppies that lacked training and have behavior issues.

According to the lawsuit, Warren also charged $18,000 to $27,000 per animal. In the amended version, Warren lied to the customers and others about the firm’s affiliation with law enforcement agencies. The founder now lives in Florida and could face extradition as stated in Article 4 of the Constitution.

A Team of a Veteran and Her Dog Provides Therapy by Visiting Other Vets

greyhound

Lou Lewis from Nashville is an Army veteran with a very well-known 9-year-old, 80-pound Greyhound. Petey, the dog’s name, works together with Lou in providing therapy to other veterans through animal visitation.

The non-profit organization called Pet Partners trained both Lou and Petey into becoming a therapy animal team. They have partnered with the Veterans Affairs back in 2019. As a result, a visitation program was created which Lou and Petey works on.

In one of the visitations, the team encountered a patient with difficulty speaking. When Petey met the patient, they were able to say the word “dog.” This is one of the signs animal-assisted therapy can improve the lives of those suffering from mental and emotional problems.

Alberta Residents Held A Living Tribute Concert in Honor of This Therapy Dog

Twillow Rose, an award-winning Shiloh shepherd therapy dog, has touched the lives of people from Calgary. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with cancer back in 2019 and was forced to retire because the treatments failed.

In honor of her service, residents of the city gathered at Pearce Estates Park for a concert. A local musician named Christopher Barran wrote the song titled “Roses Love the Rain” and performed it during the gathering.

The pooch was trained and is owned by Straja Linder King, a former instructor from the University of Lethbridge. Now, she specializes in psychotherapy and animal-assisted clinical art therapy at Strawberry Moon Counselling. She said, “I’m so blessed that she’s still on earth.”

Everything You Need to Know About Emotional Support Dogs

esd

An Emotional Support Dog’s (ESD) purpose is to reduce the impairment of a person caused by physical, emotional, or mental health conditions. However, it doesn’t mean that your ESD needs to undergo specific training.

ESDs can help their owners just by being by their side or through interaction. Despite these helpful benefits, ESDs still aren’t classified as service dogs. The training these animals receive determine their qualification for the ADA.

Unlike service dogs, ESDs cannot enter specific premises as mandated by several US state and federal laws. A few examples are public transportation and business establishments. Yet, since ESDs are pets, “no pets” policies made by landlords don’t apply to them.

Therapy Dogs Provide Comfort to California Firefighters

golden retriever pat

The Dixie Fire, which is still raging as of 1:14 am on the 9th of August 2021, has kept the firefighters in the area very busy and stressed. In the struggle to put out the biggest fire in California’s history, Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry have brought their dogs to comfort the firefighters through hugs and smiles.

California firefighter Melissa Bell said, “When you have them here, you’re able to pet them and show the love. It’s just a really special connection. And when people are out on the fire line for a long period of time, it’s long and draining days so it helps boost the morale when we come back and we’re able to pet dogs. It just brings a whole other energy.”

Our salute goes to the Lutheran Church Charities for this unselfish act of helping firefighters put out one of the greatest threats to California’s wildlife and environment.

Ontario Restaurant Refused Entry to Service Dog

no pets allowed

A restaurant in Bradford refused to let a pastor’s service enter the premises. Ganesh Ponniah, the owner of the establishment called Golden Taste of Asia, said, “Any dog is not allowed.” This caused an incident that led to the education around legislation in the area.

“We tried to explain to him, but he just wouldn’t listen,” said Cory Kostyra, interim pastor at Bradford Community Church and an owner of Lily the service dog. Ponniah, in his defense, did not know anything about service animals and issued a public apology for the incident.

This is a sad event for both the pastor and the restaurant owner. However, it will also be a good opportunity for Bradford’s accessibility advisory committee to educate businesses about the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

Are Non-Service Dogs Allowed in Food-Selling Stores?

restaurant doggo

You may have seen small dogs enter places that sell food such as groceries and retail stores. You also want to know if there are any laws that permit your pup from entering restaurants. The answer is no. Pets aren’t allowed to enter restaurants according to federal and state law.

This is due to food safety rules. Allowing an animal to enter food service establishments could hold that the restaurant and animal owner in violation of the mandates. Service dogs are indeed allowed to enter these establishments only, “If their presence is unlikely to result in contamination of food, food-contact surfaces or food-packaging materials,” said Brian Long, public affairs director for the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

These Are the Reasons Dogs Make the Best ESAs

dog at home

Have you ever wondered why Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are mostly dogs? It’s because canines are more responsive to training. Cats are also good companion animals and can bring a variety of comfort. Yet, they don’t display the same level of trainability as dogs do.

Dogs have been part of human lives since time immemorial. The bond we’ve shared with them goes beyond just master and servant. Most families around the world already consider their canines as family members. This makes dogs highly capable of sympathy towards our feelings.

Lastly, dogs have varying personalities depending on their breed and upbringing. You can choose a small companion if you prefer someone tiny to hug or be with when you sleep. If you want a bigger and more athletic emotional support partner, you can also opt for bigger breeds.

Overall, dogs are the best in all fields of animal companionship. It is our duty to reward their loyalty and unconditional love by providing them with the right care and even more than the affection they give us.
