Amendments were recently made to the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw to permit people in Calgary to have livestock as emotional support animals in their homes. Common livestock animals that are allowed include chickens, miniature horses, and pigs. Exotic animals do not belong to the list.
Calgarians who hold the permit to keep ESAs must be able to care for and maintain the animal, as stated in the terms and conditions of the permit. According to Jennifer Lawlor, business strategist for Calgary Community Standards, the amendments are a means of supporting mental health in Calgary. For more information, visit calgary.ca.
