Audi is Karen Martin’s 15-pound Schnauzer derivative. She is a registered therapy dog and a card-carrying member of Therapy Dogs International. Karen Martin, Audi’s owner said, “She (Audi) passed a TDI evaluation and embarked on a career of visiting Presbyterian Village and Baptist Rehabilitation Institute, serving as a Tail Waggin’ Tutor for kids at libraries, greeting parishioners at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, and showing up in the newsroom on days that are more stressful than usual.”

But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of these visitations have been stopped. This is due to social distancing regulations and the fear of animals being able to carry the virus from one person to another with their fur. Luckily for all of us, the CDC states that even infected pets have a low risk of transmitting the virus to humans.

Ever since the Transport Department issued a rule that officially stops recognizing emotional support animals as service animals, Major U.S. Air Carriers such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines have announced immediate adherence to the rule as well.

This makes ESA owners pay for boarding and transport of their companion animals. Not only that but ESAs are also denied to be transported in the passenger’s cabin.

The sole exception to the rule is reserved for service animals. If the animal is trained to specifically assist a person with a disability along with documentation of being a service animal, the animal will fly for free while being able to remain in the cabin alongside its owner.

ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) awarded a $10,000 grant to Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue in Stillwater, Oklahoma. This grant is part of their national ASPCA Relief and Recovery Initiative.

The initiative’s goal is to provide a minimum of 2 million USD of funding for animal welfare organizations that have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Renee Huddleston, Director of the Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue, said, “This grant will help us continue our mission for saving orphaned newborn kittens.”

Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue saved more than 6,000 orphaned newborn kittens since 2004 and they have been more sought after by those looking for furry feline companions.

The Northamptonshire Animals Needing Nurturing and Adoption (NANNA) was founded back in 2004 by the couple Petrina and Michael Alderman. Their daughter Carla was also one of the founders. Its purpose was to rehabilitate displaced wildlife, help find pets a new home, and provide a place for farm animals.

The rescue is based in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire, England and they have received £500 in donations from Davidsons Homes – also a local housebuilder. Davidsons Homes is currently building at its Diamond Heights development in the town of Irthlingborough.

The money NANNA received will be used to cover the NANNA’s veterinary bill for January. The bill includes the treatment of the animals the rescue has sheltered.

Dr. Leanne Proops, one of the supervisors in the study said, “We know that real dogs can provide calming and enjoyable interactions for children – increasing their feelings of well-being, improving motivation and reducing stress. This preliminary study has found that biomimetic robots – robots that mimic animal behaviours – may be a suitable replacement in certain situations, and there are some benefits to using them over a real dog.”

This could prove to be very beneficial to those who want or need therapy dogs but have a fur allergy.

Megan Flath is a University of Saskatchewan graduate student and grew up with animals. She realized that animals can have a huge impact on human mental health. As she said, “My sister is in her last year of veterinary medicine, so we’re a very animal-oriented family. So I got the opportunity to incorporate that into my work of researching the health of older adults.”

Along with her personal experience with animals, Megan also watched her grandparents age giving her useful insights into her research. Flath is still in the preliminary stages of her research. She is currently gathering data from places around the country regarding the benefits animals can give in terms of therapy for the elderly, especially dogs.

Every year, members of the Weston Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) do their Halligan’s Drive to Make a Difference. The activity involves collecting supplies for donations of the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility that is located in Buckhannon, Virginia.

When the supply is collected, they are then delivered on Christmas Eve to the animal control facility. A huge influence of the drive is Halligan himself, the WVFD’s 5-year-old Dalmatian. Ever since the creation of the drive in 2015, it has gotten bigger.

WVFD Assistant Chief Keith Talbert said, “Halligan is such a well-known entity, so we figured we’d use him to be the mascot for the Drive to Make a Difference.”

Spay Neuter All Pets (SNAP) Inc. is a time-honored animal welfare group based in Louisa county. Currently, they are facing a problem as the number of volunteers keeps on dropping. “Some people have retired; they’re 20 years older now and they’re tired. Others have moved away,” said Mary Robinson, SNAP Inc.’s president.

The nonprofit has only one goal in mind: To reduce the number of unwanted stray animals and the need for new volunteers is even direr due to the pandemic currently going on. SNAP Inc. had to stop operating a van to transport animals to multiple vet offices because some vets reduced their own services.

The CZU Lightning Complex fires are the worst natural disasters Santa Cruz County has faced for the last three decades. The problem is even bigger because animal owners were unprepared for it. The country is out of fire now but the scorched earth puts the Santa Cruz mountains in danger of having the next natural disaster.

Erika Anderson, the program and development manager at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, said, “We’re also telling people to plan ahead with these potential debris flow evacuations”.

If you live in Santa Cruz County, you should have a crate, feeding trays, and a trailer for your pets, larger animals, and livestock. Prepare emergency food, water, medication, and a medkit for you and your animals.
