Stolen Service Dog Returned to Owner

Remember Jimmy Nicholos who had his service dog stolen during New Year’s Eve? Through the combined effort of his friends, coworkers, boss, and local authorities, they were able to pressure the acquaintances of the dognapper to speak out and return Boots to Jimmy.

The boyfriend of the woman who took Boots and her close acquaintance agreed to take the stolen pup to the local police station. Jimmy sued the dognapper who was later identified as Nicole Lawrence.

The lawsuit filed by Nicholos seeks $100,000 in compensatory and unspecified punitive damages. In Sherman Oaks, L.A, where this incident happened, the penalty for stealing a service dog can be up to $10,000 and/or 1-year imprisonment.

4 Reasons not to Bring Your Dog to the Grand Canyon

grand canyon

The COVID-19 pandemic has made a lot of people miss the outdoors and other natural wonders. With that, visitation to the Grand Canyon is expected to rise as life slowly goes back to normal. But officials are urging hikers not to take their dogs with them. Here are reasons why:

It’s illegal – Pets aren’t allowed below the canyon’s rim. That includes emotional support animals with the exclusion of service dogs.

Trail paths and weather are hot and rough – Dogs don’t wear shoes so their paws will get burned during a hike. They are also prone to overheating under hot weather.

Hikes can be too long – Our beloved animals aren’t like us. While they are energetic at home, they aren’t as persevering as us when it comes to descending and ascending the canyon.

There are other people and animals – Some people won’t react well to the sight of your furry friend and vice versa. Dogs aren’t also fond of wild animals in the canyon such as coyotes, mules, sheep, and squirrels.

What Mental Illnesses Qualify for a Psychiatric Service Dog?

man and dog

Some people have been using emotional support animals (ESAs) as an excuse to bring their pets wherever they want. This made the ADA to not include ESA as a service animal category and caused problems for people with genuine mental and emotional issues. Instead, it’s highly advised to get a psychiatric service dog (PSD) – a service animal that functions like an ESA.

So what mental and emotional problems would allow a person to qualify for a PSD? They include PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Depending on the condition of the patient, the animal will be trained to prevent episodes, attacks, or self-harm from happening. Do you know someone in need of a PSD? Suggest them to get one as it can help in saving their life.

How Animal-Assisted Intervention Improves the Treatment of Veterans

dog and man

Dogs are the best friends of humans. They have been our loyal companions for hunting, protection, and transportation for years. And in recent years, they have found new purposes in our lives through being detectors for the ill, extensions for the disabled, and therapists for the troubled.

One example of the last newfound purpose is complementing the treatment of veterans who suffer from mental problems after service. Due to the popularity of animal-assisted therapy, most veterans who avail of a program want to be partnered with a service dog or emotional support animal.

As Rear Brain, a clinic director and clinical psychologist at Stephen A. Cohen Military Family Clinic in Psychiatry, said, “In addition to evidence-based treatments such as cognitive-based processing therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy, we aim to integrate what each individual is aiming for into a treatment plan. People really want the power of animals. As I know, I had some patients come and ask us to connect them with organizations that provide animal support therapy and service animals.“

That means that animal-assisted therapy is not only going mainstream but it’s also really effective in helping servicemen and women integrate into the society they swore to protect.

Tennessee Animal Shelter Offers Spay and Neutering Services

The PETSWORKS Animal Services of Kingsport will soon open a program to help reduce the overpopulation of stray animals in the area. With the partnership of the Sullivan County Humane Society, the animal shelter will provide a spay/neuter program to help low-income families in Kingston. It will also be the first onsite program in the region.

Tom Parham, president of PETWORKS, said, “This is a big deal for the region. The way we treat our animals is important to people. We’re focused on reduced costs for economically disadvantaged people, and it’s just one more part of the organization’s mission to provide quality animal care at an efficient community cost.”

The Best Breeds for Therapy Dogs

cute beagle

Despite every dog having a unique personality, they are generally friendly and can provide comfort to us, humans. But that doesn’t mean all canine breeds are good therapy dogs. Some are easily trained while others have a calmer temperament.

Retrievers – The Golden and Labrador Retrievers are the most common dog breeds for a majority of canine work. It’s because they are very friendly to people, other dogs, and are easily trained.

Border Collie – Originally bred to be shepherds, the border collie is a highly energetic and people-pleasing dog. A combination that works best for comforting a multitude of people in a single day.

Beagle – This small dog breed is the most popular among children and seniors in schools, hospitals, and care homes due to its calm and playful nature.

Pomeranian – Cute, intelligent, and obedient. The Pomeranian is the perfect choice for those seeking a cozy companion. Why? Because this dog breed looks like it’s always asking for a cuddle.

Is It Time to Allow Emotional Support Pets in Canadian Flights and Rental Units?

dog in train

With the rapid eradication of negative mental health stigma through widespread education and information, numerous strategies to improve mental wellness have surfaced to popularity. One of them is the use of emotional support animals.

But with this new approach to fighting against anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental problems, the debate of whether to allow emotional support animals in apartments and planes has gotten even more confusing.

The true questions must be asked: When can an ESA be allowed and what rights does a person in need of their pet’s presence have in case of a dispute. For starters, if a person has an adverse effect after being separated from their pet, a decision can be made to allow an ESA to board a plane or live in a rental with a no-pets policy.

The latter can be negotiated with the landlord. If there is discrimination leading to the decision of banning an ESA and its owner, a human rights complaint can be filed under the Canada Human Rights Act.

As a smart tip, it’s best to train an ESA into a psychiatric service dog for those who truly need animal-assisted support. It’s even better to discourage others from labeling their pets with “emotional support” for the purpose of being able to take their pet anywhere they desire.

Arkansas-Based Facility Will Train Service Dogs for People in Need

dog in training

Claire McCullar was diagnosed with PTSD, ADD, and anxiety at an early age. Melissa, her mother, got her a job as an animal groomer in Mountainburg and saw how Claire was very comfortable with animals.

Because of this, Claire asked her mom if she could have a service dog to help with her anxiety. Melissa then found a trainer in Joplin, Missouri, and explained what she and her daughter were going through.

Along with Tim Franks, the trainer from Joplin, Claire trained two of her service dogs Cricket and Goose. She learned valuable experience as a service dog trainer and got her certification at the age of 15. This inspired the McCullars to open K9 Elite Academy in Mulberry to help those who are struggling to afford a service dog train one for a more affordable price.

The Negative Effects on Pets As the World Goes Back to Normal

sad doggo

Our pets have been very happy that they got to spend so much time with us during quarantine and lockdowns. But now that most working adults all over the world have received their first and second vaccine doses, what happens to the pets left at home?

Separation anxiety appears to be the most common case and it often leads to excessive noise that would disturb neighbors or damage to indoor household objects. Jennifer Brehler, executive director of the Humane Society of Sedona, said, “We have seen this happen in the past with a smaller percentage of dogs when families return to school and longer work days after summer vacation.”

If you’re back to being busy at the office today or anytime soon, it’s best that you should prevent or ease your pet’s separation anxiety by following these tips.

Service Dog Reunites With Family After Being Spooked by 4th of July Fireworks

4th of july doggo

Fireworks during the 4th of July have been a tradition for most American households to celebrate the holiday. The problem is, this kind of practice is traumatizing to pets. Not only because it startles them, but also because firework explosions hurt their hyper-sensitive hearing.

A couple learned this lesson the hard way. Misty Gonzalez said, “We came home at 2:30 in the morning [the night Jetta the service dog got lost]. We were searching everywhere for her, we couldn’t find her, and so we cried ourselves to sleep basically. Then, the next morning, we got up at seven and started again.”

During holidays when the use of fireworks is popular, please remember to keep your pets in a dark and soundproof room with white noise like a radio broadcast. Your basement would be ideal.
