Iowa Nonprofit Helps Owners Feed Their Pets During Hardship

Linda Siems, a woman from Nora Springs, understands how it is hard for both the owner and their pet during times of need. That’s why she started a nonprofit organization called Mollie’s Mission. Its purpose? To fight pet hunger when an owner cannot take care of their pet due to medical problems.

This idea sprung from after she attended a service meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church where they were discussing feeding programs for the community. Siems said, “I left there thinking we’re taking care of the needs of our community members through providing meals. We’re taking care of the kids through our school systems. But who is taking care of the pets?”

If you live in Nora Springs and currently have problems feeding or taking care of your pets due to a medical condition, you should contact Mollie’s Mission for assistance through their Facebook, email, or website. You can also use these contact details if you want to donate and help others in need.

President Biden Signs Bill That Allows More Veterans to Receive Service Dogs

The Puppies Assisting Wounded Service Members for Veterans Therapy Act (PAWS Act) is a new law that will help more veterans afford a service dog or the cost of training them. The law also widens the eligibility of the veterans who want to avail a four-legged companion.

This means that not only those with injuries or physical disabilities will receive support from the Veterans Affairs (VA), but also those suffering from PTSD and other mental and emotional damages.

“The effects of going through a traumatic experience and that residual is with you in your mind and in your body for a very long time if no forever,” said Lani Rethaber, executive director of Patriot K9s, a service dog organization that helps veterans train their dogs to become service animals.

Starting next year, the bill will be in effect along with its five-year pilot program.

Human Services Agency Gifts Nursing Home Residents With Robotic Therapy Pets

robot pet

The Jewish Family Services delivered animated robotic therapy dogs to residents at Heritage Manor in Youngstown, Ohio. Their motto is just because seniors would find it hard to take care of pets, doesn’t mean they should miss out on the happiness of having one.

Lynne Azar, senior outreach coordinator for Jewish Family Services said, “What this does is it gives them something to love and to attach to, but also to communicate with in a physical sense with touch, with laughter and joy and so many other areas of communication that may not be verbal, but are non-verbal.”

Although the therapy dogs are robotic, they can still respond to touch and sounds providing emotional support to the seniors as real animals can give.

Ivy is an 8-year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who works with Music City Pet Partners in Nashville as a therapy dog. Her job is providing canine comfort to patients and staff in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other institutions in Middle Tennessee.

As part of the International Assistance Pet Week, which is observed during the first week of August, Ivy visited the residents and staff of the Morning Pointe at Tullahoma. She was also accompanied by the volunteers of Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care.

“She [Ivy] will visit each person in the group and knows who needs the most love by snuggling with that specific person longer than the rest. She does tricks and makes them smile,” said Kelly Brunelle, Ivy’s owner.

Kelly and Ivy will visit more care facilities and residents of these Middle Tennessee institutions can expect to see Ivy in the near future.

Lawsuit Could Make Service-Dog Company Pay over $3 Million

law

Charles D. Warren Jr., a founder of Warren Retrievers firm, a Virginia-based service-dog company, could pay an amount over $3 Million in restitution and other penalties for deceiving customers by providing them badly-trained dogs.

The office of Attorney General Mark Herring said in a news release that Warren’s animals allegedly could assist patients with autism, diabetes, and other problems. However, the customers said they were delivered with puppies that lacked training and have behavior issues.

According to the lawsuit, Warren also charged $18,000 to $27,000 per animal. In the amended version, Warren lied to the customers and others about the firm’s affiliation with law enforcement agencies. The founder now lives in Florida and could face extradition as stated in Article 4 of the Constitution.
