Question: What are the ways service animals help people with PTSD?
Answer: A service animal assists an individual affected with PTSD through the following:
- Detects the onset of psychiatric episodes
- Reduces the severity of such episodes by performing an action such as pulling on the individual’s clothing
- Reminds the individual to take medicine
- Provides safety checks or room searches for individuals
- Interrupts self-mutilation
- Removes the disoriented individual from a dangerous situation
